Dark Rain

NB - DUE TO THE FAST FLASHING STROBOSCOPIC NATURE OF THE VISUAL IMAGES THE PIECE SHOULD NOT BE VIEWED BY ANYONE WHO SUFFERS FROM PHOTOSENSITIVE EPILEPSY OR FLICKER VERTIGO

Dark Rain is an 10 minute dance work choreographed by Billy Cowie incorporating live and virtual 3d dancers. It was co-produced by Kyoto Experiment and South East Dance with support from Arts Council England and University of Brighton.

Accompanied by a fast and loud score of Japanese drumming Dark Rain presents a series of highly syncronised and offset hypnotic movement patterns. These patterns are enhanced by a series of rapid flashing visual images by the German artist Silke Mansholt projected onto both the virtual and the live dancers. Depending on space, time, finances and dancer availability the work can be presented in a wide variety of formats from at its simplest a single looped projection with no live dancers to at its most complex the full work involving 3 live performers and 6 virtual 3d performers. The work can be presented in art galleries, cinemas, theatres and unconventional spaces including outdoors at night. The work is also designed to be paired (after a fifteen minute interval) with the companion piece Art of Movement

Dark Rain will be premiered in its full version with live dancers (along with Art of Movement) at the Kyoto Experiment in September 2013
